Family of 5 with three kids needed more space in the car for a family vacation. This is an ideal option.
I purchased OEM cross bars for the roof rack of a Honda Odyssey (’09) and the clamps in the box slipped easily into place to secure it to the rack. Mechanism for securing the box is self-explanatory (though the directions are clear) and the box is sturdy. Luggage for 5 people (including blankets and pillows for the smallest two) fit easily, closed tightly and everything stayed dry through a torrential downpour at highway (+) speed.
After the trip, the box had to be removed to fit the car in the garage, so after unloading, it was pulled off. Removal is a snap. The clamps that hold the box in place don’t slide (unless I want them to) so the next time I install it, I’ll be able to do so even more quickly.
The mileage effect is about 1-2 mpg (from an average of 24 mpg to 22 mpg over the 600 mile trip). I noticed a subtle handling difference with the weight on top of the van (on the on-ramp to the interstate, it just felt like the van leaned a little more than usual). The noise from the device is negligible, really. I was skeptical since I have used a Yakima tower-type rack on my car for years and it whistles and causes quite a bit of wind noise (especially with the windows open). This box didn’t cause a perceptible increase in wind noise inside the car.
